Is .Mac Worth It?

Is .Mac Worth it? This is the very same question I asked myself when I was considering buying .Mac. For those who are not aware of what .Mac is: it is basically your Apple online. .Mac syncs your Email, Bookmarks, Address Book, Doc, iCal, Widgets, Notes and Preferences. There’s more.

The Pros of .Mac

Just like any other product in the world, there are Pros and Cons in products. Now, what other wonderful features does .Mac have?

  • Your Own Email Address
  • Your Own Webpage
  • Ability to back up your Desktop
  • Publish your photos online
  • Add-ons to specific Mac applications
  • iDisk

Having your very own email address is what really gave me the intentions of purchasing .Mac.  I just thought that it would flow really nicely. TravisReynolds@mac.com. Also it is really nice because your SMTP is through .Mac, which means when I am at a hotel I have the ability to send email with zero hassle. For web developers and people like me your very own webpage is not going to be that appealing. You don’t have your own domain, its a sub domain, TravisReynolds.Mac.com. Now, I don’t have mine set up, but that certainly doesn’t mean I won’t set it up in the near future. I have not done this yet but I am going to real soon, and that is back up my Mac. I only get 10GB to work with (you do have the option of upgrading all the way to 30GB). If your a photographer this is really nice, sure there is good sites like Flickr and Photobucket, but this just makes it so much easier. On the plus side, you publish it on your own sub domain. There aren’t many add on to mac applications, the majority of it is little add ons to iChat or Garage band and more. Don’t worry though, there nothing to enhance it, most of it are smilies or more sounds. Another favorite of mine is iDisk. I love to share things with people, this is going to be so much easier now. Let’s say I am on someone’s computer, and there’s a program or a photo on my computer at home and i want to show them. Not a problem, just log into my .Mac account and Vwala!

 Cons of .Mac

  •  Cost

What? Thats it? “There’s gotta be more cons!” Well, so far no, there isn’t. I still thinkg $100 is pretty spendy for something like this. For the use that I have had with it, I am pretty sure I will change my view down the road.  So, there you have it, the email in my opinion is amazing. The ability to check my email wherever I am at and send email is great. I love how I can sync between computers and not to mention my iPhone. I can send and check email on my phone and when I get home it’s exactly how it looks on my phone. (Expect a youtube video on this sometime soon). Now lets not forget the ability to back up your mac and share files and other programs with friends and family from there computer. Now sure $100 may seem a bit spendy, but who knows maybe the price is just right. Do you have .Mac? If not have you considered it? What are your thoughts on .Mac?
